Choosing the right device coupler technology was critical for Ashland Inc. in upgrading the fieldbus installation at their world-class 1,4-butanediol plant in Lima, Ohio; according to site process control specialist John Rezabek, device couplers “touch every valve in the plant.” They needed a coupler design that would incorporate short circuit protection and provide non-incendive spurs if existing disconnect switches were removed. Abengoa Bioenergy Corporation's greenfield production plant in Ravenna, NE enlisted Fru-Con, a large industrial engineering firm, and FeedForward, Inc., a control systems integrator to achieve the lowest total cost of plant ownership through automation and integration from an operational and maintenance standpoint. Sensor-to-Transmitter Trimming Offers Precise Temperature Calibration

Sensors, even the most precise ones, rarely reflect the accuracy level available from a good transmitter. The best strategy to achieve the highest accuracy possible is to calibrate the temperature transmitter and sensor as a unit under very carefully controlled conditions. This technique, called sensor-to-transmitter trimming, essentially "cancels out" the sensor's inherent inaccuracies.
